(Pssst – not if we can help it!)
If you're anything like I was, the idea of creating a will, setting up trusts, or even thinking about a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) feels daunting—perhaps even terrifying. I completely understand that fear. But let me share my story and explain why overcoming that fear is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.
I was paralysed by a fear that discussing death would somehow tempt fate. It wasn’t until the government introduced an opt-out system for organ donation that I was forced to confront my discomfort. Even then, the decision to become a donor was a struggle, not because I didn’t want to help others, but because I was terrified of the concept of death. I have Thanatophobia an intense fear of dying!
I have a deep-seated fear that made me avoid any conversation or action that hinted at mortality. For a long time, I assumed that if something happened to my partner and me, our children would automatically be cared for by their grandparents.
I also believed that since we didn’t have much money, a will wasn’t really necessary. Both of these assumptions were dangerously incorrect. Without a will, the legal process that follows a death is complicated and stressful, especially for those who are already grieving.
By the grace of God, nothing happened to us while our children were small, but looking back, I realise how precarious our situation was. The lack of a will could have led to legal battles, misunderstandings, and, worst of all, uncertainty for our children at a time when they would have needed stability the most.
It wasn’t until I decided to become an advisor for Life is Too Short that I truly understood the gravity of my previous inaction. The knowledge I gained during my training shocked and saddened me. I realized how many people are living under the same misconceptions I once held, unaware of the potential consequences for their families if the unthinkable were to happen.
The truth is, having no will makes an already difficult time even harder for those left behind. It’s not just about distributing assets—though that’s important, too—it’s about ensuring that your wishes are known and respected. It’s about making sure your children are cared for by the people you trust, that your assets go to those you love, and that your legacy is one of thoughtfulness and care. As someone who once avoided this topic out of fear, I understand how difficult it can be to take that first step. But I also know now that taking the time to create a will, set up trusts, or establish an LPA is one of the most loving things you can do for your family. It’s a way to protect them, even when you’re no longer here to do so in person.
I know this isn’t an easy conversation to have. Talking about death, planning for it, feels uncomfortable at best and terrifying at worst. But it is a necessary conversation. The peace of mind that comes from knowing your affairs are in order, that your loved ones will be cared for, is immeasurable. It’s a gift you give to those you love, one that will be appreciated long after you’re gone.
