“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” - Benjamin Franklin

Hey there!

We totally get it – the world of wills can be full of surprising twists and turns. It's like discovering a plot twist in your favourite book! Here are a few other laws around wills that might catch you off guard:

Surprise #1: your digital life needs sorting too

Did you know you need to specify what happens to your social media accounts and digital assets? Yep, those holiday photos on Facebook and that epic Twitter following won’t manage themselves. Make sure your will includes instructions for your digital legacy.

Make sure your will specifies who should look after your favourite pet. (well and your least favourite too, really)

Surprise #2: pets aren't automatically covered

Love your fur babies? You’ll need to mention who should take care of them in your will. Pets are considered property under the law, so if you don’t specify a guardian, there’s no guarantee they’ll end up with your favourite cat-sitter.

Surprise #3: marriage affects your will

Tied the knot recently? Congrats! But here’s the catch – marriage can actually revoke your existing will. Time to update it, so everything’s still set according to your wishes.

Surprise #4: informal promises don’t count

Told your best mate they can have your prized collection of vintage vinyls? Unless it’s in your will, that promise won’t hold up legally. Make sure all your special bequests are written down to avoid any mix-ups.

Surprise #5: exes can make claims

Even if you’ve moved on, an ex-spouse or partner could make a claim on your estate if you don’t update your will after a divorce or separation. Keeping it current is key to ensuring your assets go where you want them to.

Surprise #6: it’s not just about money

Wills aren’t just for the rich and famous. They cover everything from guardianship of your children to your final wishes. It’s all about making sure your voice is heard, even when you’re not around to speak for yourself.

Ready to dive deeper?

If these surprises have got you thinking, let’s chat! We’re here to help you navigate the ins and outs of will-making, ensuring your wishes are crystal clear and legally sound.

Got questions? Fire away! We’re here to make the complex simple and maybe share a laugh along the way.
